Pile on the pillows.

Just because you only sleep with one pillow beneath your head does not mean your bed is limited to just that. Adding extra pillows will create a cozy ambiance and focal point. For an extra bonus, choose pillows that also offer comfort. You will be so pleased when you snuggle up to the perfect goose feather pillow before entering your dreams.

Housing Needs Solution Tips for your queen size bed pillows

1. Stack your sleeping pillows neatly atop one another for a no-fuss presentation. Here, the bottom pillows have standard pillowcases, while the top two are encased in standard shams. (The shams have a flange around the entire perimeter.)

2. Layer a pair of luxury decorative pillows in front of a sleeping stack. Use a pattern that incorporates a color from your bedding to tie together the look.

3. Or, prop up pillows fitted with standard size shams in front of your sleeping stacks. This is best done with pillows that have some heft, as light and airy feather pillows have a tendency to be floppy, and thus sloppy.

4. Add a single decorative pillow, preferably 20-inches-by-20-inches in size, centered in front of the propped up shams.

5. Another option: Prop your sleeping pillows up against the headboard, then layer pillows outfitted in shams in front. Finish with a centered pillow encased in a boudoir sham, which fits a smaller 12-inch-by-16-inch rectangular pillow.

6. Start out with the formation above, but finish with a pair of boudoir pillows centered in front of each pillow sham.

7. Start with a pair of plump European squares for this pillow formation. Use inserts that are one-inch larger than the European sham to yield a full and rounded pillow. (This is especially good for filling out a bed without headboard, or for styling a bed with a particularly tall, oversize headboard.) Next, add your sleeping pillows. Directly in front, layer standard pillows encased in standard shams. Finally, add a fourth layer of smaller size pillows in boudoir shams. Note that all the rectangular pillows align with each other, just a bit offset from the edge of the European squares, so they peek through.

8. Try this pillow formation, which varies from the one above only in that the fourth and final layer is a centered decorative pillow. Don’t be afraid to go bold with pattern here. Or, for a more subdued style, use a decorative pillow with a tone-on-tone texture.

9. Go with a pair of European squares for a more streamlined look, or a pair of standard shams pulled slightly to the outer edges of the bed, and a third layer of boudoir pillows pulled slightly to the center. It’s clean, but with a bit of tension to make things interesting.

10. Finally, do the same as above for the first and second layers, but center a single boudoir pillow on the standard shams. Note, if you use pillows with standard pillowcases on your bed, you’ll have to remove them to pull off this look as well as the one above.

Housing Needs Solution Tips for your king size bed pillows

1. Prop up three European shams in the back, against the wall or headboard. (Again, consider using an insert one-inch larger than the sham to achieve a full, rounded effect.) Add a pair of king size pillows encased in shams, and finish with a trio of smaller pillows fitted with boudoir shams (12-inches-by-16-inches) at the very front.

2. Prop three European shams along the back of the bed. Instead of king size pillows, use three queen or standard size pillows with shams for the second layer, then center two boudoir pillows on the gaps. (Note that European squares often coordinate with the duvet in terms of color and pattern.)

3. Begin with the same trio of European shams in the back. Add a pair of king size pillows in king size shams. Finish with 20-inch-by-20-inch decorative pillows centered in front of the two king size shams.

4. Once you arrange the foundation of European squares at the back, prop up three standard size sleeping pillows layered with another three standard size pillows outfitted with shams. This is a simple arrangement, but a style with some depth.

Adding curtains as a window treatment will create the illusion of a larger space. Curtains of similar color to the wall specifically make a room appear larger. Set draperies higher than the window to enhance the overall grandness of the room and choose long curtains to add length to the window.

Bedroom Curtain Fabric Ideas

In a bedroom, fabrics can veer toward the outright romantic and elegant, or toward lighter, trendier patterns. But this is a room that most people go traditional in, where plaids, stripes and florals dominate. Though geometric prints have taken center stage in the last five years, from chevrons to Greek keys. Geometrics help balance the design evenly between masculine and feminine.

Because bedrooms are typically low-traffic rooms, it’s possible to use fabrics here that you might not use other places, like silk or velvet. Lined curtains are a necessity if you want to limit the light coming in for better sleep. Blackout curtains are also a natural choice, blocking light as well as some sound, and creating a quiet sanctuary.

Bedroom curtains give you a chance to express your style. Whether you choose a traditional floral or a trendy geometric, your room will be a beautiful haven and a perfect reflection of you.

Your bedroom should be an expression of yourself. Add a few quirky pieces that describe your personality in a nutshell. Decorating your space doesn’t need to be an expensive visit to an art gallery either. You will find the most unique artwork at markets, thrift stores or even through your own DIY creation.

When decorating your bedroom, your first question should be “headboard or no headboard?” If you have one, is it low or high? For a high headboard, where the space above may be minimal, keep it simple.

Put three smaller artworks in a row a few inches above the headboard or consider one long, narrow, panoramic artwork. If you have either a low or no headboard, a grouping of three or more artworks can work beautifully depending on the type and the height of your bedside lamps.

Consider these options: center a great abstract with a restful view of the horizon and place two complementary pieces on either side over the lamps. This reflects the symmetry that often works well in bedrooms.

Or, depending on the width of the wall, cluster smaller artworks into an arrangement that extends beyond the bed and over the bedside lamps. It’s easy to use art to tie all of the elements of your bedroom together.

Look down.

Don’t forget about your floor! Rugs offer more than visual appeal. Placing a rug down spares your feet of a cold embrace with the morning floor. Not to mention, a heavy rug pads the ground creating a sound-proof effect if there is a story beneath your bedroom.

If you’ve ever stepped out of bed just long enough to realize that the floor might as well be a polar ice sheet, then you understand why a bedroom area rug is more than just a good idea. Not only do bedroom area rugs save your chilly toes, but they also flaunt your unique style and personality. You can use a rug to hide annoying carpet stains, buffer noise, and protect your solid floors from being scratched by a weighty bed frame. Use these tips to choose a bedroom rug that pulls your decor elements together and cozies up your personal space.

  • Make Sure Your Rug is the Right Size
  • Pick an Area Rug Style
  • Select Appropriate Rug Materials
  • Choose Your Rug Now, Accessorize Later
